How to hide default icons on Windows 7

September 30, 2012
They can get annoying. The icons on Windows 7 sitting on your desktop could get really annoying and there is no obvious way to delete it. I'm talking about apps such as Recycle Bin and My Computer; you know the default ones. However the method to remove the icons is really easy when you know how to do it, and this is what I'll be covering in this post. I'm not exactly sure on what versions of Windows this method will work, but it does certainly work on Windows 7. Before we start you might want to check out these few related articles on Alwarakiblog:
So let's get started.

Apple promoting maps apps on the features tab in App Store

September 28, 2012
Wow. I've never seen Apple losing badly before, but when they actually did fail they admitted it. And honestly worked towards delivering a better customer experience. The image below says it all.

Made by me :)

Tim Cook's message earlier today wasn't enough for Apple to satisfy their customers. They very recently added an extra section in their featured page that links to a few maps apps they recommend. They also added a sentence on top of this page linking to Google Maps (their competitors!) and Nokia maps web versions and guide users through how to add a shortcut to the home screen.

Tim Cook apologizes to customers considering the new maps app

September 28, 2012
After the complaints of the new maps app in iOS 6, Apple told customers to use the maps app more frequently and it will improve. They also apologized about the issues in the app. In the meantime we posted a method onto getting the Google Maps experience back. Now CEO of Apple Tim Cooks seems to realize the the problem is actually way too big for customers to ignore and published this message to his customers. He apologizes about the problems with the app as well as giving a few alternatives to the built-in maps. He further promoted the fact that the more people who use the app, the better it will become. Below is the full message published on Apple's press blog.

Gold iPhone 5 for sale in Dubai

September 27, 2012
clip_image002Some people can become really insane about a product. And I truly mean insane when I say it. I’m not sure if you heard of this before or if it’s completely alien to you; Golden iPhones. I don’t mean just a case, I mean the actual iPhone is made of gold! A London based firm called Gold & Co that is specialized gold plating mobiles are the ones who made it. While many countries around the world are desperately waiting for iPhone 5, Gold & Co seem to target Dubai for some reason (You know it!).

The iPhone 5 comes in two separate colours:

  • Yellow gold and black model for $4628
  • Rose gold and white for $5036

The phones are available in Dubai Mall and are going to be made available in more countries soon. Why get a Black & Slate iPhone when you can get a Black & Golden one! I have seen a black and gold iPhone 4S and I have to admit if it looked really great. So if you got the cash you may want to try it out! Because I would. Would you feel guilty spending that much cash for a phone?

Wi-Fi problems still happening in iOS 6

September 27, 2012
iOS 6 was described as a tick rather than a tock by many journalists and bloggers across the web. But now it seems like even the tick created a lot of bugs in the 'world's most advanced mobile operating system'. We thought that Apple had already fixed the issue but apparently the trouble didn't die yet. We are looking for fixes now and there are a few ones you can do.
  • Turn on bluetooth and your Wi-Fi will work
  • Restore your iPhone
  • Keep on playing around with airplane mode toggle
Surprisingly the bluetooth toggle does some how fix the Wi-Fi problem. You can have a look at this 91 page thread on Apple Support Community. Drop us a comment if you have a fix.

September 26, 2012

Google Android have just come up with some happy news for them and Android users. Google Play announced on their official Android blog that they have accomplished a few remarkable achievements with their App Store. According to Google:
  • There are 675,000 apps on Google Play
  • 25 Billion apps downloaded
These numbers are as I said quite remarkable as during the iOS 6 keynote Tim Cooks announced that the App Store has 30 Billion downloads and 750,000 apps. Apple are winning but Google are getting there.

Beliw is what Google posted on their Android blog:

Maybe Blackberry 10 is really good after all!

September 26, 2012
I have never ever liked a Blackberry before. These useless devices that had the least tools of communication compared to other smart phones was seen as a social communicating device. And I just hated the fact that people used Blackberry so much (especially where I live). It was all until today. Today I say two videos of Blackberry 10 that made me see that Blackberry might still have a future than die out over the next few years. Blackberry 10 could revolutionize what a Blackberry can do. It is that good. The first one is a quick review of Blackberry 10 Alpha B, followed by a song made by three Blackberry vice presidents. Yes the vice presidents do sing!

How to get the Google Maps app back

September 24, 2012
Yes it's becoming possible. Just after Apple failed to deliver a good mapping experience in iOS 6, many users have asked for the Google Maps app back. Although Google said that they are about to deliver their own iOS maps app that should be available before Christmas; this was not enough. People want the Google Maps app back and they want it now. So the good news is you can get it now!

Launch Safari and load up maps.google.com. You can even add a shortcut to your home screen. The app functions very similarly to the actual previous Google Maps app so you may as well give it a try. Below is a video explaining how to get it. Followed by details of a hacker porting the previous maps app into iOS 6.

This is how the new Maps app will improve in iOS 6

September 21, 2012
Apple responded to the criticisms people are shooting out about the new maps app. Although one of their biggest features in iOS 6, it is apparently what is getting all the complaints. Apple seem to know that it sucks at the moment but say that the more you use it the better it will become. So instead of using an app with more features e.g. Google Maps; I am supposed to use an app with less features and reliability so that it can get better! Below is the statement that Apple said to AllThingsD:

Customers around the world are upgrading to iOS 6 with over 200 new features including Apple Maps, our first map service. We are excited to offer this service with innovative new features like Flyover, turn by turn navigation, and Siri integration. We launched this new map service knowing it is a major initiative and that we are just getting started with it. Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get. We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better.

We understand that it is not easy for a maps app that has just become available to be really good, so perhaps we should give Apple a chance. And to be honest it isn't that bad anyway!

This is why iOS 6 Wi-Fi was not working

September 20, 2012
If you updated to iOS 6 yesterday you were almost certainly having a problem with your Wi-Fi. Don't worry the problem wasn't from you, it was from Apple. Apple have a page on their website that your iPhone actually connects to in the background to check if the router has a password. So what happened was that the page was down, perhaps they changed its name or something. And what would happen is your iDevice would connect to Wi-Fi connect to the page and not find it. You would get an error saying that the page is down. Apple fixed it now and you can connect to Wi-Fi just like before.

It's funny how such a small change that happened by a web developer in Apple caused such a big issue. Be careful! Anyway is your Wi-Fi working for you now?

Cell Phone Monitoring Programs: 3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Let Your Child Keep Secrets from You

September 17, 2012
This is a guest post by Brian Coulter (more details at the bottom of the post). He covered up the top 3 dangers that Blackberry monitoring software can prevent previously. If you want to write us a guest post click here.

Most working parents confront the dilemma of work-life balance day in and day out. While providing a cell phone resolves this issue to an extent, it does not give you the complete peace of mind about your child. He still may choose to keep some secrets from you because of his/her vulnerable age, natural inclination, and peer pressure. However, a cell phone monitoring program gives you precisely the power you need to secure your child’s better future.

With a cell phone monitoring program, you can monitor the physical location of the phone as well as its calls, messages, internet browsing, gallery, address book, and even the calendar on the phone. The software uploads the logs to the vendor's website for your secured watching.

Some people aren't very keen on this idea. However, it allows you to know what your child goes through. And it helps you keep a guard on your children because:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Review

When the world market that is already overflowing with tablets in all shapes and sizes, Samsung has come up with a successor to the successful Galaxy Tab 10.1. It is understandable that Samsung has been hoping to oust Apple from its position of an undisputed king with the release of Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. But, sadly, the truth is far from it. After the success of the original Galaxy Tab 10.1, it was expected that Samsung comes up with an equally wonderful successor. The second iteration from Samsung is a well designed product, no doubt, but offering no other compelling reasons to even consider it against more established alternatives. Let’s see what Samsung has on offer in Galaxy Tab 2 10.1.

Samsung's anti-iPhone ad crushed! (Updated with another pic!)

September 16, 2012
Samsung have released an anti-iPhone 5 ad in which they attempt to show that the iPhone 5 is not good at all and that Samsung S3 already has all the features in iPhone 5 plus a lot more. This ad was proven totally incorrect by another image. I've included both images in this post.

It's really ridiculous for Samsung to even use such an ad to promote their phone. So your phone is better because you listed more of its features and left out the features in iPhone 5 blank? And anyone who sees this ad will certainly know what a feature like ShareShot actually is right? Very persuasive. Below are the spaces for the iPhone 5 section filled in to compete with these found in Galaxy S3. Yes it does seem that Samsung forgot to fill them in.

A few questions and answers about Islam

What Islam actually is and who is Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him?

September 15, 2012
I know this post may be irrelevant to what this blog is about, but I find it my duty to share this information as much as I can. Please please please carry on reading it will only take a few minutes but you will hopefully know a lot more than you did about Islam

I would like to start off by wishing for blessing to whoever got killed during the past events from the American ambassador and his assistants to protesters at embassies. May they rest in peace. Before I start going on about Islam and Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him, I would like to point out a rule in Islam and that is no generalization. So only the people who made the offensive movie and only those who accepted it's publishing are to be blamed about it, other than that people who had no matter with the issue are not to be blamed. I still respect Americans and Westerns as much as I always did. I respect them like I respect my Muslim brother. It is my duty to do so and it is what I believe is right. On the other hand it is the Americans and Westerns duty not to generalize Muslim acts. Whatever has happened to them from one Muslim has happened to them from that person and not from Islam.

So what is Islam? Islam is a religion that wants people to do the right thing. To please God, others and themselves. Islam never asked us to be against any religion. In fact, a certain part of the Quran says 'You shall have your religion and I shall have my religion.' (109:6) So the point I'm trying to make is that Islam never told us to mistreat someone because of their religion. You have your religion and I have my religion, it doesn't matter. What matters is not to generalize acts. I will never put my fist to your head because of your religion or your country. But I would pull a gun to your head for your acts. So please everyone, don't generalize. I'm talking to both Muslims and Non-Muslims here.

Islam wants to teach us to follow what we believe is the right thing. To put religion as a priority in our lives. To learn how to please ourselves with good positive acts towards others. And this is why Prophet Mohammed PBUH is loved for. I'm not sure what some of you guys have been told about him. But I know that in most cases you haven't been taught good stuff about him and Islam. I'm not attacking anyone here I just know that a lot of Westerns have been told bad things about Islam and what it actually is. For example the latest movie that has caused the big anger in our hearts. So I just wanted to share a few things with you.

Our great Prophet Mohammed PBUH has once said that if you kill someone it is like you killed all of the humans, and if you saved someone's life it is like you saved the life of all humans. So any deaths that have happened to our Non-Muslim brothers isn't what Islam has told us to do. I'm not saying that Muslims are never supposed to ever kill someone. If there is a good reason to kill someone such as in a war then fine that's when you should kill them, but killing someone to show you have power or killing someone to show your anger towards another person is totally against our beliefs. So if you killed my family I will kill you. But if someone who has the same passport as you killed my family I will treat you like a family member to me. Friendship means a lot to Islam.

Islam is about forgiveness and treating others with ethics. Our Prophet Mohammed PBUH has clearly taught us to do this. A great story showing his forgiveness is when he returned to Mekka from Al-Madina. He had left Mekka due to their bad behaviour to him. When he returned back to Mekka as a winner and with a lot of power the people of Mekka asked him, "What are you going to do with us? How will you torture us?". Because they knew that now he got more power than them and can torture them back for what they had done to him. Instead he told them,"Go away you are free!". This reply made most if not all of the people convert to Islam. This is what Prophet Mohammed PBUH does, and not what these offensive incorrect movies claim. I hope you are getting more of a background of what he was like. I'm not saying that anyone should be Muslim or saying anything about any other religion, I'm just trying to let you know more about Islam and our Prophet.

This is what most Muslims believe is true, it's just that the media is portraying a negative image about us. So I used the opportunity of my blog to use it as a source of media that shows you a different view about Islam and Muslims to what most media now shows. I hope that you think of Muslims the same way you think of Non-Muslims. I hope that reading this gave you a bit more knowledge about Islam. Please Please Please do a bit of more research about Islam because honestly most of us are nice and what the media shows you is only a small amount of us. We all do bad things but that doesn't mean that other should take the consequences of it. So please don't hate someone for their religion. And please support us in being against the offensive movie that has been published about our Prophet. I know that some Non-Muslims already are and I thank them a lot for it. Please be the same as them. I hope you take this seriously. Please tell any of your friends that hate Islam to read about us first. We are not different to you. Religion is like a shirt. Some people believe this shirt is better while others believe that another shirt is better. And just because we wear the same shirt doesn't mean that we are the same person.

Thanks a lot for reading this. If you found it interesting you may want to read the questions and answers about Islam.

Mobile Phone Insurance: Who Needs It?

September 4, 2012
This is a guest post by Jaydeen Taylor (more info at the bottom of the post). If you would like to write a guest post please click here.

Mobile phones are becoming advanced these days. Every now and then, we receive news about the leading mobile phone manufacturer’s flagship models that have the state of the art features. For this reason, a lot of people consider their advanced mobile phone as their precious possession.
While all mobile phones come with a store warranty and factory warranty which helps guarantee the purchaser from defects that may arise from the manufacturer or store’s end, this will not be enough to secure one’s valuable mobile phone. Especially after storing important files and contacts information and embellishing and customizing it with functional and entertaining apps that can be downloaded using a high speed internet connection, the mobile phone’s worth becomes more than its purchase price.
In this case, the mobile phone will need the utmost security that it can possibly get. And what better way to get this than with a mobile phone insurance.
